Getting credit measures the ease with which credit may be obtained and also the availability and scope of credit information through credit reporting service providers. Data for this indicator is collected by means of a survey completed by financial lawyers. Rankings are determined by both the responses from the financial lawyers an analysis of the applicable laws and regulations and public sources of information.

In South Africa the regulation applicable is the National Credit Act 34 of 2005, which makes provision for the control and regulation of all credit transactions. The National Credit Regulator was established under this act and is responsible for the regulation of the South African credit industry and enforcement of the Credit Act.
